Help Protect Sea Turtles

by Tom Smith Team

Sea turtle nesting season begins May 1 and ends Oct. 31.

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Sea turtle nesting season begins May 1 and ends Oct. 31. Newly hatched turtles find their way to the sea by following the natural light reflected by the water. Young turtles have a small amount of energy that must take them to the water. Under natural conditions, they go to the brightest spot on the nighttime beach. If they disorient and head the wrong way, they may starve to death before landing in the floating sargassum weeds that are their food source.

Clearwater city ordinances determine specific lighting requirements for beach parking lots, streets and promenades to protect sea turtles. If you live near the beach, shut off or dim your lights at night.

In May 2018, Clearwater approved a voluntary resolution that promotes the long-term goal of reducing the harms of plastic pollution and single-use plastics. The city also partners with Ocean Allies, a grassroots environmental cause to help protect the environment.

Residents are encouraged to choose reusable or paper-based items when playing at the beach, and properly dispose of all garbage to help protect sea turtles and other marine life. Follow these tips from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to help protect sea turtle nests:

  • Flatten sand castles and fill in holes.
  • Bring reusable bags, straws and containers to prevent plastic waste from entering the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Pick up and properly dispose of litter on the beach.
  • Take all personal belongings from the beach at the end of the day, so no obstacles exist on the young turtles’ way to the water.
  • Stay off the dunes and use the designated walkovers for crossing.
  • Shield any artificial lighting that might shine toward the beach.

The Tampa Bay area averages about 120 nests each season, and each nest can contain an average of about 100 eggs. If you are lucky enough to find a turtle nest on the beach, don’t disturb it. If the nest is unmarked, notify the Clearwater Marine Aquarium at (727) 441-1790.

It’s time for family fun with the 2019 Children’s Day – Día del Niño – set for noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 27 in Clearwater’s Downtown Gateway.

The city of Clearwater’s free festival, which will be held on Cleveland Street between Lincoln Avenue and Betty Lane in Downtown Clearwater, will feature children’s amusement rides, art activities, music, dance groups, raffles to win prizes, bicycle giveaways for children, food vendors and more.

For a number of years, the city of Clearwater has helped spearhead Children’s Day – Día del Niño – to celebrate the city’s children. All the free activities at the event are geared toward children and families, including the bounce house, bungee jumping trampoline, face painting, balloon artist, caricature artist, tennis demonstrations, Clearwater Fire & Rescue firefighters and fire truck and the Nomad Art Bus, which helps unleash children’s inner creativity by allowing them to paint the exterior of an entire van.

“It’s an awesome opportunity to bring the greater Clearwater community together and celebrate one of our treasures – the children,” said Gabe Parra, the city’s community development manager.

The event also offers free parking at Cleveland Street and Lincoln Avenue.

For Condos in the Clearwater Beach market ranging from $400,000 to $800,000 the average sale price has fell from $615,000 in January to $571,000 in February and $554,000 in March.  Total sales ticked up to 23 units in March from 20 in February.  Inventory dropped from 8 months to 7 months and the total number of listings remained at 160.  Over the last 2 years the average sale price of Condo’s in this range have been in a range with bounces as low as $521,000 in February of 2018 and as high as $615,000 in January of $2019.  Sales per month reached its highest total in June of 2017 with 36.  Since then sales have been in a slow downward trend managing to break over 30 units only once since.

Pricing and condition continue to be the largest factor in the amount of time a property takes to sell. The “sweet spot” is when a home is in top condition and priced competitively, creating a higher demand and more activity. The result is less time on the market

What The Demolition of The Harborview Center Means

by Tom Smith Team

This is exciting news! The demolition signifies the first step in moving the Imagine Clearwater plans forward. The plan is expected to take 10 years to finish. Some of the highlights of the plan includes:

  • 19 acres of park space a 110% increase in what is currently in Coachman Park
  • 4 acre increase of event space
  • $55 Million total plan investment
  • .3 miles of new walkway along the intercoastal
  • .4 miles of new Bluff walk area

The demolition of the Harborview Center in Downtown Clearwater began in January 2019 following contract approval with Biltmore Construction, who began asbestos abatement and geotechnical remediation in preparation for demolition. Approximately 40 percent of the building has been demolished and current videos and photos can be found on the city's social media accounts. The entire demolition is to be complete by early August.

The Harborview Center's demolition and removal of its adjacent surface parking is part of phase one of the "Imagine Clearwater" Master Plan approved in January 2017. The city's engineering department and Biltmore Construction gave an update on the demolition process at a city council work session on Feb. 19.
